Successive peace agreements in the DRC are failing mainly due to the fact that the EU governments have not tackled the main driving force of rebel movements ánd the Congolese army: making huge financial profits through the exploitation and trade in gold, coltan and tin from the Kivu region. In an open letter to the current Swedish EU Presidency, Fatal Transactions and many other NGOs ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Carl Bildt, to take the lead in initiating stronger international action to tackle the ongoing violent conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The letter was also signed by Global Witness who recently launched its new report ‘Faced with a gun, what can you do?’, demonstrating the involvement of European based mining trading companies who allow conflict minerals to enter their supply chain.
