Fatal Transactions co-hosts the Diamond Dialogue at the European Parliament

On Thursday October 16th, Fatal Transactions in cooperation with De Beers -the world largest diamond producing and selling company- hosted the first 'Diamond Dialogue' in Brussels. The Dialogue took place in the European Parliament and was hosted by Richard Howitt, Member of Parliament and European Parliament rapporteur on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Diamond Dialogue and the EU
The Dialogue brought together NGOs, European think tanks, civil servants and politicians from the European Union and members of the private sector. The focus of the meeting was the implementation of the EU-Africa Strategy in which both civil society and the industry are asked to play an important role. The EU-Africa Strategy is a document produced by the European Commission and the African Union and outlines how the 2 continents want to work together in the future. It stresses the need for an equal relationship, based on respect and common cultural, social and economic interests.

Fatal Transactions
Fatal Transactions used the platform to express their concern on the implementation of the EU Africa Strategy since NGOs have been very poorly engaged so far. Furthermore, it showed the long-standing commitment to work in so called multi-stakeholder dialogues with companies such as De Beers in tackling conflict resources. The prime example is the Kimberley Process in which Fatal Transactions have been working together with De Beers since the beginning in 2000.
