The Kimberley Process

Signed in 2003 the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is an agreement between governments not to import or export conflict diamonds, diamonds used to finance rebels’ wars. It is not a perfect system but helped to end the conflicts in west Africa and Angola.Of course, the Kimberley Process cannot simply be copied to the trade in tine ore, coltan or gold in the eastern DRC. But the Process should serve as an successful example for African ánd European governments to seek similar solutions to stop minerals fuelling conflicts, as now happens in the DRC.
