Niza: Petition ‘Clean Call for Congo’ signed by 1200 persons
On 14 March 1200 signatures of the Clean Call for Congo were handed to Mike Loch (Motorola & GeSI) who is a representative of the electronics industry. The signatories demand that their electronics will be conflict free.
During the handover, the public blew symbolically 1200 soap bubbles to clean their ‘dirty’ mobile phones, which might have been produced using conflict resources from Eastern Congo, such as coltan and caasiterite. Besides demanding that electronics companies do not extract natural resources from conflict areas, signatories want them to take responsibility for their complete supply chain, including the working conditions in the mines at the bottom of the supply chain.
Mike Loch, who is employed by Motorola and is connected to the umbrella organisations GeSI (Global e-Sustainability Initiative) and EICC (Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition), has promised to take up the petition demands in the upcoming coalition meetings of the electronics industry.
