Fatal Transactions conference report ‘Digging for Peace’ available now!
On 21-22 November 2008 the annual Fatal Transactions conference was held in Bonn. The conference was hosted by Fatal Transactions member BICC and offered a platform for analysing the current status quo of resource extraction in (potential) conflict areas. The conference report is available now.
At the conference ‘Digging for Peace: Private Companies and Emerging Economies in Zones of Conflict’ representatives from companies active in conflict zones exchanged knowledge with civil society, politicians and academics about the role of private companies in conflict zones. The conference report combines the initial conference addresses and keynote speeches and contains summaries of the panel discussions and a conclusion by Fatal Transactions’ International Coordinator. It discusses what the consequences are of company behaviour in conflict areas and what positive contributions they can make to peace and development through corporate social responsibility. The conference reportalso devotes particular attention to aspiring companies from emerging countries, especially China.
Options for action were to be identified on the basis of experience with attempts to regulate the diamond trade (the Kimberly Process) and encourage transparency in the extractive sector (the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, EITI).
