The Netherlands to support reconstruction programme for eastern Congo
The Dutch government has made a commitment to contribute 19 million euro to the United Nations in light of the peace agreement currently under way between the Congolese government and rebel groups.
Fatal Transactions hopes the Dutch government will not ignore the role natural resources are playing in the conflict. At present, the Congolese army is profiting from the income and taxes generated by resource extraction, so are the rebel armies. Ignoring the link between the conflict and the mining minerals will hamper a peaceful ending to the conflict. In March 2008, Fatal Transactions member IPIS will publish a conflict mapping analysis on the Eastern DRC province of North-Kivu and a part of South-Kivu.
