Making Diamonds Work for Development

As members of the Madison Dialogue, Fatal Transactions and EarthWorks published the report "Making Diamonds Work for Development". The report gives an overview of development initiatives by private- government- and non-governmental actors. Fatal Transactions has been campaigning on the negative implications of diamond mining on peoples’ security and livelihoods since 1999. Now, positive initiatives to use diamond exploitation as a vehicle for development are increasing. This paper is overview of the state of affairs of these initiatives.

One of the report’s conclusions is that despite the many initiatives, only a few are actually addressing the root of the problem which is the misery of the diamond communities. Fatal Transactions believes that ethical diamond jewerly only truly contributes to development if a fair share of the diamond profits ends up with the miners themselves. From fatal to fair transactions.
