Dossier on Sudan's Oil now online
Fatal Transactions partner IKV Pax Christi has finalised a dossier on oil in Sudan for information-sharing and awareness-raising in Sudan together with an oil-map which gives insight in which oil companies exploit what areas in Sudan (related to ECOS)
Africa’s natural riches does not deliver peace and sustainable development. The Fatal Transaction campaign is working to change this through research and lobby, while informing a large European public about the realities of Africa’s economy. A dramatic surge in the quest for oil and mining opportunities has not been accompanied by adequate regulation of its impact on people and their environment. Many companies have carved out a strong position through massive bribery, by funding warlords, taking sides in violent conflicts, negotiating poor deals with incompetent politicians, and destroying the environment because not to do so would cost some money.
Sudan is a case in point. A handful of companies is cashing in annual profits of billions of dollars; roughly 25% of total production value disappears out of the country that way. They have knowingly invested in a civil war and hundreds of thousands of people have been violently displaced and never received any form of compensation. The Sudanese state has no environmental laws enforcement mechanisms whatsoever, while the industry is running a purely cost driven operation in the midst of the world’s largest pristine wetlands.
The Fatal Transactions campaign, in cooperation with the European Coalition on Oil in Sudan has summarized the main facts and issues surrounding Sudan’s oil industry in a concise report to inform a wider audience about a defining industry.
