Fatal Transactions Summer School 2007 in Wroclaw, Poland.
From 10-15th of September 2007 Fatal Transactions’ Polish partner organises a summer school at the University of Wroclaw. Preceding the summer school the University will host an international conference on conflict resources. The summer school will host student participants from Central and Eastern Europe.
This time Fatal Transactions, already well recognized in the West expands to the East of Europe to embrace the new EU member countries. The summer school will consist of two separate, though closely interlinked parts: a conference and workshop.
The conference will take place on the first two days (10-11 September) and is going to gather academics and activists from different parts of the world, including Africa. The participants will cover a number of thought-provoking natural resource related themes and many geographical locations from the Horn to the Francophone part of Africa. The representation of the Polish academic community will be particularly strong as they are expected to spread the message and ideas of the campaign in their alma maters and thus raise the awareness among the students.
The second part of the summer school, the workshop, will host student participants from Central and Eastern Europe. The region is going to be represented by student from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Rumania but also from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Under supervision of the Fatal Transactions instructors the students will study and discuss various aspects of the extraction and trade of natural resources and their impacts on the livelihood of African people. The political, social and economic aspects will be discussed as well as different initiatives and activities towards better transparency in African mineral sector.
